Naming of Dinghy in honour of Debbie Taylor

On 17th October 2024 TLS named one of our dinghy's in honour of Debbie Taylor.  Debbie, who sadly passed away earlier this year, approached TLS in 2017 with the idea that TEALS could sail with TLS as customers and get involved with helping us at the same time. In the beginning TEALS were at the Lake on Thursday and would prepare lunch for the volunteers, help with launching and recovering the dinghies.  The result has been a continuing mutually beneficial relationship between the two organisations, with two of the TEALS now being volunteers.

We were  joined by Debbie's family members for the ceremony.  Debbie's husband, Stuart, was taken out for a sale with skipper Sandra Barton. in the newly named dingy.

Riverside Park Railway visits

For the past few years Riverside Park Railway have kindly invited TLS to spend a day with them, situated in Riverside Park, Bittern, SO18 1PQ.

They allow TLS volunteers and sailors to have a day by the river, with a picnic and ride on the railway. The railway has a carriage that can accommodate a wheelchair together with family members so everyone can access the railway.

We will be visiting the Railway this year on Sunday 23rd June 2024. Please see photos from previous visits.

TLS helps Centenarian to fulfil her Bucket List

Joyce who is a resident in a care home in Winchester compiled a list of 10 adventures she wanted to have before her ‘big birthday’ in May 2023. She is a wheelchair user and unable to move by herself. One of the things on her list is to go sailing again. Testwood Lakes Sailability invited Joyce along to be sailed around the lake by an experienced skipper in a non-capsizable dingy. On 13 April 2023 Joyce came to TLS and ticked off ‘to go sailing again’ from her bucket list. Asked how she was enjoying the experience Joyce said: “This is wonderful. I feel so special. It’s like when I went sailing when I was younger. I can’t believe this was all for me. Thank you so much!”

After the sailing, Joyce was presented with a birthday cake by all the volunteers at TLS.

Laura from companionship team at St Catherines View Care Home: “The weather was amazing and Joyce really did have a day to remember.  To see her smiling, laughing and having fun was exactly what we wanted – These wonderful people all made her special wish come true.”
